Alice Schank

As long as I can remember, I’ve had the desire to draw and paint. When I babysat as a young teenager, I’d draw the children. The parents always wanted my drawings. It’s a very satisfying feeling to make a piece of paper or canvas come alive.

I’ve studied fine arts at the College of Lake Co. and McHenry Co. College. Currently I study with artist Tom Trausch in Woodstock. I also draw live models with the Portrait and Figurative League in Woodstock. In addition to that, I take several art related workshops a year. This year I spent a week in Santa Fe with the Taos Art School.

Every year I participate in local art fairs and exhibits where I’ve done pastel portraits from life. Since it’s begun, I’ve been accepted in the juried “Real People Show” in Woodstock. I am a member of many local art groups and the Portrait Society of America.

I have always loved realistic work. In addition to painting people, I have a passion for painting birds and animals. Because of my love of nature and the environment, I find that birds and amimals are an endless source of inspiration. Every painting is another chance to capture the beauty of the magnificant creatures who share the world with us. When I paint birds, I try to portray their spirit and energy. Painting horses is a challenge to try to show their power and majesty. Cats evoke beauty and mystery that I try to capture on canvas.

Most of my wildlife paintings are done from photos. I take my camera everywhere I go, the forest preserve, the zoo, my neighborhood walks and any trips we take.

I work in a realistic, but painterly style. My preferred medium is pastel, but I work in watercolor, acrylic and oil as well.
